What I expected was a quirky British film staring Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins about a quirky British upper class lady who puts on a risque theater production. Expected was maybe a flash of cleavage and some, let’s say sly titillation. Presented was all that and a whole lot more.
“Mrs. Henderson Presents” is a quirky comedy-drama based on a real story that occurred during the years leading up to and including World War II. Mrs. Henderson not only presented a show, she presented all a young woman can show, but in a very “artful” manner. Even though there is a significant amount of nudity, its presentation is more naughty than coarse.
Dench and Hoskins are at their best as adversarial business partners who fight to hide their affection for one another. Christopher Guest, as a reserved government official, plays well off the more flamboyant roles of Dench and Hoskins. (103 min.)
